Neighbors gather to light up the night

Even famous recluse Henry David Thoreau, who claimed in “Walden” that he “never found the companion that was so companiona­ble as solitude,” kept three chairs ready for company and ate regularly with his mother during his two-year experiment. Basically, everyone needs a little community every once in a while.

Around Central Florida, neighborho­od-centric regular events entreat residents to escape their houses and break out of their routine visits to the same haunts. These monthly nights offer an activity to dive into and get to know the people and businesses who make up a place.

If you’ve been looking to throw a little irregulari­ty into your regular rut, here’s a handful of free events that can introduce you to a new side of your town.

The rain maintains a light drizzle on this evening toward the end of the week that still isn’t quite the weekend. Despite the weather and work in the morning, a crowd has formed outside the doors of downtown Orlando’s CityArts Factory, funneling in as though a show were about to start. And it is.

Third Thursday functions as the opening reception for the seven galleries in CityArts as well as several other venues around Orlando, such as the Gallery at Avalon Island and the Grand Bohemian Hotel.
