Winter Park wraps up 10-0 record

Tyrone Davis scored three touchdowns and Winter Park completed a perfect regular season with a 35-21 football victory at Lake Mary on Friday night.

"A lot of people said this would be a rebuilding year for us," Winter Park head coach Tim Shifflet told his players. "But we're not rebuilding anything. We're district champions. We're Metro [Conference] champions. We're 10-0."

The Wildcats, ranked second in the Sentinel Super 16 area rankings, will open the Class 8A state playoffs with a home game next Friday night at Showalter Field.

No. 11 Lake Mary (7-3) led 14-7 in the second quarter, but Winter Park rallied with consecutiv­e scores to take a 21-14 lead. Davis, a junior, found the end zone on each of Winter Park's first three scoring drives.

Wildcat quarterbac­k Cameron LeGree iced the contest with a 17-yard touchdown run with 1:26 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Brandon Brown threw two TD passes for Lake Mary. But in the end the Wildcats defense rose to the occasion. With Lake Mary attempting to tie the game in the fourth quarter, cornerback Michael Lopez intercepte­d Brown, haunting any chance of a Rams comeback. Cullen Honohan also recorded a second-half intercepti­on for Winter Park.

Winter Park’s playoff opponent will be announced on the FHSAA’s online pairings show Sunday morning, starting at 11 a.m.

Seminole freshman quarterbac­k Timmy McClain had the game of his life, but the Seminoles still needed a big defensive play to win a wild one.

McClain passed for 221 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score to rally the Seminoles past upset-minded Bishop Moore 34-25. Seminole’s Stanley Wynn iced the win when he returned an intercepti­on 48 yards for a score, sending the visiting crowd into a frenzy.

Bishop Moore’s Keanu Kong, who passed for 186 yards and three TDs, threw for two of his scores at the start of the fourth quarter to give the Hornets a 25-21 lead with four minutes, 58 seconds to go. But McClain hit Grayden Krull for an 18-yard TD with 1:35 left to move the ’Noles ahead 28-25. Bishop Moore drove to its 45 before Kong was intercepte­d by Wynn.

No. 4 Wekiva survived a full-moon scare, coming from behind twice to defeat No. 16 Lake Nona 46-34 in a matchup of playoff-bound teams.

Senior quarterbac­k Brandon Williams rushed for a game-high 133 yards and a touchdown and threw for two scores for the 8A district champ Mustangs (9-1).

Senior cornerback Jarvis Ware had two pick-six intercepti­ons, one for 80 yards to tie the score at 7-7 in the first quarter and another for 25 yards in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Junior quarterbac­k Michael Kern was 31 of 55 passing for 303 yards and four TDs for Lake Nona (7-3), a 7A district winner. Wekiva’s capped its best regular season since the school opened in 2007.

No. 14 West Orange (6-4) won 42-7 at Ocoee (1-9) in a game that administra­tors called an end to with 11 minutes and 42 seconds to go due to disturbanc­es outside the stadium.

There were reports that altercatio­ns occurred on campus during the game. The stadium was cleared while the teams stayed behind before West Orange boarded its buses.

Ismael Cortes ran for a two-point conversion in the final minutes to give Windermere Prep (9-0) a 49-48 victory against visiting Orlando Christian Prep (6-4) in a Sunshine State Athletic Conference playoff game. The winning play followed a kickoff return TD by Codre Jackson.

Orangewood Christian (7-2) posted a 41-21 road win over previously unbeaten Faith Christian (9-1) in another SSAC second-round game.

The First Academy (9-0) tuned up for the Class 3A playoffs with a 49-30 home win over Villages (5-5) that capped the Royals’ second straight perfect regular season. TFA will carry a 21-0 regular season streak in 2018.

No. 8 Port Orange Spruce Creek (8-1), a bubble team in the 8A playoff race, ran away with a 64-27 victory at New Smyrna Beach (5-5).

Lorenzo Lingard scored five touchdown for No. 12 Orange City University (5-4) as the Titans won 48-18 over rival Deltona (3-6).

Trinity Prep (7-2) quarterbac­k Spencer Fetter passed for 402 yards and three TDs and the Saints won 34-30 at Space Coast (3-7).

Oviedo (6-4) pulled out a 35-30 win at Lake Howell (3-7).

Wildwood, winless a year ago, completed a 9-0 regular season with a 43-0 home win over Bell (4-6).

Gateway (6-4), in the running for an 8A playoff berth, won 33-14 over Mount Dora (5-4).

East River improved to 9-1 with a 32-27 win at Freedom (2-8).
