Big wins propel Apopka, Wekiva

Area teams are on the rise in the Sentinel Super 16 high school football rankings entering the second round of the playoffs this week.

District rivals Wekiva and Apopka leaped Jones for the third and fourth spots after winning handily against Super 16 opponents.

Wekiva blasted then-No. 11 Lake Mary 51-0 while the Blue Darters ran away with a 54-21 win over then-No. 7 Seminole.

“We were really having confidence in the run game and our defense stepped up for us,” said Apopka sophomore Jecoryan Davis-Hamilton.

Jones dropped to No. 5 after losing in the first round 43-30 at home against stateranke­d Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons.

Boone and Edgewater each moved up three spots after opening-round wins.

Here’s our updated Super 16 rankings entering the second round of the postseason:

Touchdown runs by Braxton Jones, Malcolm Davidson and Jakobe Thomas led way in 44-16 win vs. Bradenton Manatee (5-4).

Tyrone Davis scored four TDs and WP defense registered 12 tackles-for-loss in 42-14 win vs. then-No. 8 Port Orange Spruce Creek (8-2).

Brandon Williams accounted for four scores and Jarvis Ware returned a kick for TD in 51-0 win vs. then-No. 11 Lake Mary (7-4).

Jecoryan Davis-Hamilton rushed for three TDs and Isaiah Williams recovered a fumble and had a sack in 54-21 win at then-No. 7 Seminole (8-2).

Tigers gave up over 300 yards rushing and were sacked seven times in 43-30 loss vs. Fort Lauderdale (10-1). Cardinal Gibbons

Christian Williams recovered two fumbles and returned one for a TD in 35-7 win vs. Davenport Ridge Community (7-4).

Hornets rushed for 283 yards and overcame two turnovers for 34-21 win at Fort Pierce Westwood (6-3).

Bucs buck trend of being eliminated by Miami teams past four years by winning 21-12 vs. Miami Norland (6-4).

Seminoles allowed over 400 yards rushing and turned ball over three times in 54-21 loss vs. then-No. 5 Apopka (8-3).

Senior Jay Swegheimer scored two defensive touchdowns in first half of 28-13 win at Flagler Palm Coast (9-1).

QB Kyle Minckler finishes with 1,757 yards passing, 570 yards rushing and 30 total TDs after 42-14 loss at No. 2 Winter Park (11-0).

Quondarriu­s Whitfield caught two TD passes and rushed for another in 31-21 win vs. Gainesvill­e Buchholz (5-6).

Sophomore Nemea Hall rushed for 332 yards and five TDs in 70-32 bowl game win vs. Lyman (5-6).

Rams offense held to less than 150 yards in 51-0 loss at No. 4 Wekiva (10-1).

Did not qualify for Class 8A playoffs.

Lions turned ball over four times in 17-10 loss vs. Wesley Chapel Wiregrass Ranch (8-3).
