QB Moore takes first-team snaps

- By Chris Perkins

DAVIE — Matt Moore was under center when the Dolphins practiced Wednesday because starting quarterback Jay Cutler remains in concussion protocol, according to coach Adam Gase.

It remains unknown when Cutler might return to practice or whether he’ll be able to play at New England on Sunday. Gase said Monday Cutler would remain the starter if he’s healthy.

Gase said there will become a point this week where he has to make a decision on the starting quarterback.

“I’m sure there will be a point I make a decision,” Gase said. “I don’t really know what the timetable is right now. I’m just kind of taking it day by day right now.”

Gase said the decision, ultimately, is out of hands.

“When you’re in the protocol, as coaches, we remove ourselves and let that process kind of take care of itself. Really at the end of the day, the protocol tells us what the right thing to do is.”

Cutler didn’t play in the second half of last week’s 30-20 loss to Tampa Bay after being evaluated for a concussion at halftime. Cutler threw three firsthalf interceptions in the game.

Moore, the starter for the 40-0 loss at Baltimore when Cutler was sidelined with a rib injury, threw for 282 yards in the second half against Tampa Bay, including a 61-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kenny Stills.

Gase said it could be beneficial to Moore to get some snaps with the first team this week whether or not he’s the starter against the Patriots.

When asked whether he’d feel comfortable starting Cutler if he didn’t practice this week, Gase didn’t provide a solid answer.

“We’ll see,” he said. “Right now I can’t do anything about where he’s at in protocol. It just is what it is.”
