Tigers, Sooners are big winners

- By Matt Murschel

Check out the top 10 things we learned during the college football weekend.

Once again, Auburn has stunned the college football world by beating the No. 1 team in the country. The Tigers knocked off No. 1 Georgia on Nov. 11 and did it again Saturday, this time by beating No. 1 Alabama to earn a spot in the SEC Championship and a rematch with the Bulldogs. The winner is a near-lock for a spot in the College Football Playoff semifinals. against top-10 teams under coach Jim Harbaugh and a disappointing 0-3 against the Buckeyes.

The Pac-12 has clung to the belief that it still had a chance — albeit a slim one — to earn a spot in the playoff semifinals. But losses by Alabama and Miami coupled with a threeloss Stanford earning a spot in the title game effectively ended those chances.

Rivalry Week didn’t disappoint as the War on I-4 gave college football fans one of the best games of the season as the teams combined for close to 1,200 yards and scored four touchdowns in the final 7:33 of a back-andforth affair. It ended with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that gave UCF the 49-42 win.

During the past two weeks, eight different Football Bowl Subdivision coaches were fired and several more jobs are expected to open up in the coming days. The majority of the coaching vacancies involve jobs in Power 5 conference, including five in the SEC.

The Bruins surprised a lot of people when they announced the hire of Chip Kelly Saturday morning. The move comes less than a week after the school fired Jim Mora Jr. and involved some serious courting to convince the former Oregon coach to pass on Florida.
