Knights’ Frost still in mix for top jobs

- By Iliana Limon Romero

UCF held off one major push for the services of coach Scott Frost, but other threats remain.

Sources suggested Frost passed on the Florida Gators job before UF hired Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen on Sunday. Florida officials have not confirmed the dialogue with Frost, although he was praised throughout their search process.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers, Frost’s alma mater, are still looking for a head coach and UCF’s coach is widely believed to be among their top targets. Frost has been a popular candidate among elite programs searching for new head coaches after inheriting a UCF team that went 0-12 in 2015 and steering the No. 15 Knights to an 11-0 run so far this season.

UCF leaders, however, aren’t so sure Frost will be leaving. The Knights are confident about what they are building with Frost, but others are in a position to offer millions beyond his current salary.

Nebraska is far from the only school eager to recruit Frost, a former Oregon offensive coordinator whose offensive philosophy has been influenced by new UCLA coach Chip Kelly’s rapid-fire attack with the Ducks and elements of legendary Nebraska coach Tom Osborne’s tactics, among others. Texas A&M, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Tennessee are among the high-profile schools hunting for a head coach who could make a run at Frost.

The coach insists he’s focused on preparing UCF for the American Athletic Conference title game Saturday against Memphis. “This place is really special,” Frost said. “... I knew we could be good. I didn’t think it would happen this fast.”
