Mustangs move to No. 1 ranking
Wekiva can add yet another first to its growing list of accomplishments on the football field this season.
The Mustangs moved into the No. 1 spot in the Sentinel Super 16 rankings for the first time this week after pummeling then-No. 1 Winter Park 33-6 in a Class 8A region final.
Wekiva, the third topranked team in the Super 16 the past three weeks, hosts No. 2 Dr. Phillips in a state semifinal Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Mustangs won a rainy regular-season meeting 14-0 on Oct. 5.
Wekiva enters the game as district and regional champions for the first time since the school opened in 2007.
Dr. Phillips moved up one spot after winning 28-19 at Sarasota Riverview to inch another game closer to a return trip to the state title game. The Panthers lost 14-10 a year ago vs. Miami Southridge at Camping World Stadium.
Defense registered six turnovers and safety in 33-6 win at then-No. 1 Winter Park (12-1). Friday vs. No. 2 Dr. Phillips (11-2).
Jaquarri Powell returned fumble 78 yards for TD in fourth quarter of 28-19 win at Sarasota Riverview (11-2). Friday at No. 1 Wekiva (12-1).
