Kyle Arnold: Ice cream “love” on horizon for Orlando.

- Kyle Arnold

A new ice-cream spot is coming to downtown Orlando south of Lake Eola.

Maria Mercado signed a lease for a spot in the 420 East Building on Church Street south of Lake Eola and hopes to open The Greenery Creamery in early 2018.

“We want to use as much Orlando local love as we can,” Mercado said. “We want stuff fresh from local farmers and mix-ins like cake and brownies from local bakeries.”

Mercado, who formerly managed Google Street View crews in Orlando, said she’s been discouraged by the lack of eclectic ice-cream options in Central Florida.

“I went to school in New York and there were so many crazy flavors and ingredients,” she said.

Construction on the space will start in December with hopes to open it in late January or February.

For now the shop will just serve ice-cream cones and bowls, but Mercado hopes to expand to sundaes and coldbrew coffee later.

New Asian spot

A new Asian fusion, fastcasual restaurant called Wonton Asian Cuisine has opened in Winter Park on Fairbanks Avenue.

Owners renovated a former salon and spa near U.S. 17-92 for the new eatery. Wonton serves a sampling of popular foods from across Asia from wontons and banh mi sandwiches to tacos and sliders.

“We try to set ourselves apart with fresh ingredients and making everything we can in-house every day,” general manager Brent Childers said.

Like the name implies, one unique offering on the menu is wontons. Childers said wontons are made fresh daily with fillings such as spinach dip, spicy chicken or traditional ingredients such as crab.

There are also dessert wontons with fillings such as bananas Foster flavor or apple pie.

Childers said there could be comparisons between other popular Asian fusion restaurants such as Pei Wei or Orlando-based Hawkers Asian Street Fare. But he said the restaurant is trying to bring in more local and natural ingredients, such as farm fresh eggs and meat.

The restaurant on Fairbanks will be a test to see if Wonton Asian Kitchen has the viability to grow as a brand and become a chain, he said.

“But first we’ve got to get ourselves off the ground with one restaurant,” he said.
