Semoran street cleanup part of group’s ‘Motherly Love’

WINTER PARK – The dented cans and tattered clothing strewn along the shoulder of Semoran Boulevard at Aloma Avenue was picked up Sunday, leaving patches of grass and shrubs free from litter.

More than 60 volunteers from the World Mission Society Church of God in Winter Park scooped up thousands of pieces of trash along State Road 436 early Sunday — but that was just a fraction of the work the church is doing worldwide.

For the past two weeks, members of the Church of God in 175 countries have picked up trash along enough roads to circle the Earth, in what it calls the “Mother’s Street” worldwide cleanup. It culminated Sunday.

“It’s a shame isn’t it?” Janet Dunlap, a member of the local group said as he picked up a Modelo beer can from behind cacti growing beyond the northbound lanes. “Look at these beautiful plants.”

In about 6,000 regions of 175 countries, volunteers are tidying up about 25,000 miles of roads, which is about the Earth’s circumfere­nce, church officials said.

Wearing bright green vests, the members of the Winter Park branch walked from Bishop Park Drive to Hanging Moss Road, collecting litter. At the end of their path, they dropped off their day’s work to be picked up sanitation workers.

The name “Mother’s Street” stems from the church’s belief that God is the mother and the father, spokeswoma­n Nahely Molina said.

“We want to be able to share the love of a mother,” Molina said. “We want to embody the love of Christ,
