Fireworks usage out of control in Florida.

- James Kuehn Orlando

Since the only fireworks that are legal in Florida are sparklers, I ask our lawmakers and police departments:

First, why do we allow the sale of fireworks in the state if they’re illegal to use here? Second, why aren’t police departments enforcing the law? The use of fireworks by private citizens is out of control. A lot of people are firing off canons until 2 a.m., and for those of us who abide by the laws, it’s annoying. We have no recourse; thus incidents like neighbors accusing the Clermont man of threatening them with a gun and a chainsaw are the result of people being pushed over the edge.

What it comes down to is consideration for others, and it seems most people have lost that ideal. Not only is there noise pollution from these illegal acts, but also ground pollution. People leave their spent bottle rockets in the streets and neighbors’ yards with no intent of cleaning up their mess.

I can say I am not proud to live in a neighborhood where some of my neighbors partake in fireworks. One of my best sayings is “just because you can doesn’t mean you should.”

As for the lack of enforcement, I say it’s time to do a better job by banning the sale of fireworks in Florida and fining those who break the law. I know there are a lot more people who feel as I do, and so do our pets. If only dogs could talk.
