Sea of chic black on red carpet

In the wake of the scandals that have recently rocked Hollywood, the big question on Sunday night’s Golden Globes red carpet wasn’t “Who are you wearing?” Rather, it was “Why are you wearing black?” — putting less emphasis on the night’s glitz and more emphasis on the issues of gender inequality and abuse.
The red carpet’s near blackout was, of course, in recognition of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements’ call to wear black in a show of solidarity against Hollywood’s culture of sexual harassment.
“People are aware now of a power imbalance, and it’s something that leads to abuse,” said nominee Meryl Streep. “We feel emboldened in this particular moment to stand together in a thick black line dividing then from now.”
The night’s usual parade of scene-stealing brights gave way to fashion’s most democratic color, but the night was far from a sea of monotony. Dresses embellished with jet and crystal beading (Margot Robbie), sheer fabrics (Angelina Jolie) and stunning gowns with trousers (Alison Brie) were top trends.
Accessories were kept to a minimum, but many of the guys, such as like Justin Timberlake, Alexander Skarsgard and James Franco, accented their tuxedos with the small black-and-white Time’s Up pin that was created to support the campaign against harassment and inequality.
Looking at this red carpet, black has never been a brighter color.
