Seminoles remain unbeaten in soccer

- By J.C. Carnahan

Seminole jumped all over Port Orange Spruce Creek and never relented in a battle of boys soccer unbeatens on Monday.

Ashton Neff scored twice inside the opening minutes of the second half to help the host Seminoles roll to a 4-1 win and run their record to 15-0-2 with six regularseason games to go.

“That’s been kind of the story the past two games going into the [holiday] break,” Seminole coach Emrick said of emerging in the second half. “I’m not sure what that issue is, but when our guys are focused we’re real tough offensively and we score some goals. We’ve just got to get that focus for 80 minutes.”

Both teams entered the match ranked in the state by TopDrawerSoccer.com. Spruce Creek (16-1-0) moved up one spot to No. 5 this week while Seminole came in at No. 8.

Neff, who returned to the field Friday after suffering a hamstring injury last month, put the ball in the right corner after shaking off a defender from the middle of the 18-yard box. He followed that up for another goal into the opposite side moments later for 3-0 lead.

The quick scores sealed the fate of the visiting team.

“We knew it was big because we didn’t want to let them get back in the game, because then it turns into a back-and-forth [game],” Neff said. “We have a big game against Lake Mary on Wednesday, so it was important that we pounced on them in the beginning of the half and put up two goals, and pretty much ended the game.”

Seminole added another to take a 4-0 lead with 20 minutes to play when Gabriel Toro set up Amidian Alce for a finish in front of the mouth of the goal.

The Hawks were on their heels throughout much of the match, managing to put the ball on target just a handful of times before netting a goal with just 14 seconds to spare.

Seminole had a goal overturned midway through the opening half when Alce was called offside after crashing the goal box. An own-goal by the Hawks followed to put Seminole in front 1-0 with 15 minutes to play before the break.
