MIAMI — James Blake says that as a player, the Miami Open was one of his favorite events.

He will now focus on elevating the experience for current players in his new role as tournament director, which had been rumored and was made official Thursday.

Blake, who won 10 ATP singles titles and ranked as high as No. 4, was known as a leader during his 14-year career as a player and has remained a respected figure in the sport as a tennis analyst for Tennis Channel and CNN, and as president of the USTA Foundation.

“James’ extensive knowledge of tennis from both a player and tournament perspective, along with his proven leadership skills, great reputation and strong relationships throughout the sport, make him the perfect choice to serve as tournament director of the Miami Open,” said Adam Barrett, executive director of the event.

“He is going to make our team stronger and will be a great bridge for the players and fans.”

In the role which was created for him, Blake will focus on player relations, media and broadcast as well as tournament improvements and innovations.

Tommy Haas has excelled in a similar role for the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to lead the Miami Open team that has been putting on one of the best tennis events for more than 30 years,” Blake said.

“As a player, I always loved playing in Miami and I am excited for the opportunity to take the tournament experience to a higher level for the players, sponsors and fans.”

Blake retired as a player on the main tour but has played in ATP Champions Tour events since, including at Delray Beach last February.

The upcoming Miami Open will be played for the final time at the Crandon Park Tennis Center on Key Biscayne March 19-April 1.

In 2019, the event will move north across MiamiDade County to a new facility at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens in 2019.

Blake will have a busy March, doing commentary for Tennis Channel during the BNP Paribas tournament before taken on his new duties in Miami.
