Yes — ‘America first’

-

Choice Edwards’ letter on Wednesday reminded me of how much America has become a cult of personality. In terms of electability and popularity ratings, it matters little what a person has actually accomplished; it matters all if he or she is “likable.” And being “liked” is not the same as having “character.” Being polished is not the same as being effective.

Edwards tells how President Trump is a user of “expletives and blatant lies.” Many former presidents waxed crude from time to time. They were, after all, all men, and men can get that way. Lies? That accusation is breathtaking when compared to the promises President Obama violated.

Edwards’ assault on Trump concludes with a remarkable observation: that people from certain other countries no longer want to “come to America with him as president.” America’s economy is once again moving in a healthy direction. Employment is up, with some segments way up. America’s doors remain open to legal immigrants, as always. This president, unlike his predecessor, prioritizes current U.S. citizens. He is for “America first,” and he’s not ashamed of that.

President Obama, on the other hand, thought “nativist” was a dirty word and that it violated American “values.”

That reflected President Obama’s political philosophy to me — American “sameness.” Trump wants to return America to its historical position of leadership. Dedicated leftists believe that is arrogant, and, like Obama, we have much to apologize for.

Like Trump, I disagree. Noel Smith Casselberry
