Undefeated Oviedo stays atop rankings

A trio of state-ranked girls soccer teams top the latest Sentinel Super Six entering region final games tonight.

Wins for Oviedo and Lake Nona would set up an all-Central Florida Class 5A state semifinal Friday between schools sharing the same nickname: Lions.

Oviedo, No. 2 in both the state and national winter rankings by TopDrawerS­occer.com, is on the road against Gainesvill­e Buchholz. No. 14 Lake Nona hosts Palm Harbor University.

Montverde Academy, ranked No. 4 in the state, earned close wins in the first two rounds of Class 4A region play. The Eagles reached the 2A state final a year ago.

The season is over for Winter Park, Timber Creek and Lake Mary.

Trinity Prep, which enters the Second Six after knocking out Bishop Moore on penalty kicks in a 2A region semifinal, hosts Gainesvill­e P.K. Yonge in a region final.

No. 2 team in Top Drawer Soccer’s winter national rankings now has 20 shutouts after wins against Dr. Phillips and Lake Mary.

Eagles, ranked No. 4 in state, defeated Viera on penalty kicks and won 2-1 over Melbourne in region semis.

Lions moved to No. 14 in state after 2-1 OT win vs. nationally-ranked Lithia Newsome and 1-0 win vs. Plant City in quarterfin­als.

Wildcats, who beat Timber Creek in regular season, missed out on regionals after losing in district semis to Lake Nona.

Season ends for Wolves with back-to-back losses to Lake Nona (3-1) in district final and Newsome (5-0) in region opener.

Rams defeated Apopka 7-0 in region quarterfin­al before losing to Oviedo for third time this season, 3-0, in semifinals.
