Top girls squads host for playoffs

A Sentinel Super Six showdown and a district championsh­ip rematch highlight tonight’s second round of girls basketball region tournament play.

Area No. 2 West Orange (24-4) hosts No. 4 Colonial (23-5) in Class 9A and No. 1 Lake Highland Prep (22-6) is home against The First Academy (20-8) in 5A for region semifinal games. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

The Warriors, who defeated Colonial 55-49 in a region quarterfin­al a year ago, enter the game averaging 59.9 points per game led by juniors

(14.9), (13.2) and

(10.7). Colonial averages 56.5 points per game. Senior

leads the way with team highs in points (15.7) and rebounds (6.8).

Lake Highland Prep seeks its third win over TFA this season after defeating the Royals 68-42 on Jan. 11 and 55-46 on Feb. 9 for a district tournament title. LHP senior

averages 17 points and four rebounds per game. First Academy senior is averaging 15.7 points and 4.5 rebounds.

No. 3 Lake Howell (29-2) is also home. The Silver Hawks, in a region semi for the first time since winning a state title in 2009, face Melbourne (20-4) in 8A.

Other area teams with homecourt advantage tonight will be Oak Ridge in 9A, Daytona Beach Father Lopez in 7A, Bishop Moore in 6A, Orlando Christian Prep in 3A, and both Ormond Beach Calvary Christian and Kissimmee City of Life in 2A.

The West Oaks boys basketball team will look to avenge its only Sunshine Independen­t Athletic Associatio­n loss of the season when the Flame (23-8) host league leader Victory Rock (19-7) of Sarasota tonight at 7.

Oviedo (22-0) takes on Lourdes Academy (25-1) of Miami in Friday’s 1 p.m. state final at DeLand’s Spec Martin Stadium.
