How to make your vacation delicious.
I’m hoping some vacation time is approaching for some of you as we move toward the spring break season. Traveling is a great opportunity to get out of your comfort zone in more ways than one. I like to take advantage of some new drinks and eats at my destination, and I’m sure you do, too. Here are some tips to make your vacation delicious.
Fire up the computer:
Everybody eats, usually to a mammoth degree, on vacation. A widespread interest in eating authentically while in a new city or country means plenty of advice online.
Check out local newspapers, blogs, city websites and even local social media mavens on Instagram. Don’t be afraid to reach out to a few of them for tips as well — most people like to show off the culinary scene in
their hometown. Take a look at restaurant review websites, too, but with a grain of salt.
Also, search for souvenirs particular to your vacation spot. It sounds strange, but I’ve found information about a local hot sauce, winery and chocolate factory by doing just that.
Head out: Go to a local farmers market or grocery store to find unfamiliar produce and specialty foods. You’ll hopefully also meet a few locals who can give you some suggestions on local restaurants to visit.
Stay in: Plan a night in if you’re lucky enough to have a kitchen in your lodgings. This will give you extra incentive to visit that local market for dinner ingredients. Even if you don’t have a kitchen, depending on your vacation spot, there may be some unique local items such as cheese, smoked meats or breads that don’t need cooking.
