Secret Service teams with Easter Bunny for egg drop

- By Skyler Swisher

The Easter Bunny is going first class — getting the Secret Service to help drop thousands of eggs from high above this weekend, a church says.

Flight restrictions related to President Donald Trump’s visit had threatened to stop NewSound Church in Wellington from tossing more than 40,000 Easter eggs from a helicopter.

But the event can now proceed provided one caveat is met — a Secret Service agent rides shotgun in the copter, said David Terrell, the church’s director of creative services.

“Our team is just ecstatic we were able to to make it work,” he said. “We felt like it was God. We were bummed we weren't going to be able to do it, and it turned around at the end of the day.”

About 500 children are expected to participate in the drops, which will take place after Easter services on Saturday and today.

A spokeswoman with the Federal Aviation Administration referred questions to the Secret Service. A Secret Service spokesman could not be reached for comment Friday.

While commercial air traffic is not affected, smaller private planes and helicopters are typically grounded within a 30-mile ring of Mar-aLago. The restrictions are in place through 5 p.m. today, according to the FAA.

Trump is on his 16th visit to Mar-a-Lago since becoming president.

Trump’s trips to Mar-aLago have derailed other aviation-related events in South Florida. Last year, a helicopter couldn’t take off for an Easter egg drop planned at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. Instead, the church scattered the eggs on the field.
