Port Orange Spruce Creek won its 27th state weightlifting championship with a runaway performance in Panama City on Saturday.

No other school has won more than 10 titles in the history of the sport.

The Hawks had one weight class winner, Vinny Sneed, and used superior depth to total 26 points for a decisive victory over Navarre (14) of the Panhandle in the Class 2A meet. New Smyrna Beach senior Josh

Hibbard repeated as a state champ with a 575 total in the 139-pound weight class. Hibbard tied the FHSAA finals record for his weight class with a 325-pound bench press and hoisted 275 over his head in the clean and jerk.

Harmony’s Brett McCarroll placed second with a 515 total.

Trevor Gilley of New Smyrna was runner-up in the 154 weight class, helping the Barracudas tie for third. Timber Creek, led by third-placer

Bryce Mattos, and Harmony finished in a four-way tie for 11th.

Avinash Jawahir of Dr. Phillips placed third in the 169-pound weight class.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Elias Lindholm scored 49 seconds into overtime as the Carolina Hurricanes prevented Tampa Bay from clinching the top spot in the Eastern Conference by beating the Lightning 3-2 on Saturday night on the final day of the NHL’s regular-season schedule.

Justin Williams had a goal and an assist, Jordan Staal scored a deflected goal and Phil Di Giuseppe had two assists for the Hurricanes.

They had lost three straight and four of five down the stretch during their ninth straight season without making the playoffs — tied for the thirdlongest such drought in NHL history.

Ondrej Palat scored the tying goal with 8:49 left and Ryan Callahan also scored for Tampa Bay.

But with star Steven Stamkos out for a third straight game with an upper-body injury, the Lightning earned just one point for going to OT but relinquished control of the Atlantic Division race to Boston.

The Bruins, who beat Ottawa 5-2 on Saturday night thanks in part to David Pastrnak and Tommy Wingels scoring 51 seconds apart in the second period, will win the division and claim the top spot in the East if they beat Florida tonight in Boston in a game postponed by a winter storm Jan. 4.

The Panthers were eliminated from playoff contention at home Saturday despite Vincent Trocheck scoring late in the third period to help hold off Buffalo 4-3. Their slim playoff hopes ended when Philadelphia beat the New York Rangers 5-0 earlier in the day, and Florida took out its frustration on the Sabres, going ahead 3-0 in the first period en route to its franchiserecord 27th home victory.

Carolina’s winning goal came after Teuvo Teravainen charged between the circles and looked left to Lindholm, who one-timed it past Louis Domingue.

That came after J.T. Miller set up Tampa Bay’s tying goal when he found Palat with a slick pass and the defenseman one-timed it by Cam Ward to make it 2-2.

Ward made 32 saves against the NHL’s highestscoring offense. The Lightning average a league-best 3.56 goals. Domingue stopped 39 shots for Tampa Bay, which had won two straight and three of four.
