Spring Sting set at Bishop Moore

-

State contender Bishop Moore hosts its Spring Sting boys volleyball tournament today and Saturday.

The Hornets are the top-rated team in an eightteam field that includes second seed Timber Creek , which is fresh off a Wednesday win against 2017 state runner-up Lake Mary (20-2).

Bishop Moore’s only loss of the season was to defending state champion Miami Killian at a South Florida tournament in March. The Hornets play Venice at 4 p.m. and Orlando University at 6 today in pool play.

Timber Creek faces Olympia at 4 and Tampa Berkeley Prep at 6 on court two.

Saturday’s semifinals are set for 11 a.m. and noon, leading to a 2 p.m. final.

Bishop Moore, the defending state champ in girls lacrosse, is used to taking every team’s best shot, and the Hagerty Huskies gave them theirs in the first half Thursday.

But the Hornets (16-1) countered with five unanswered goals in the second and won their final game of the regular season 9-3. The score was knotted 2-2 at halftime until Caitlin Brauman broke the tie 21 seconds into the second half, and Cate Curry scored a minute late to give the Hornets a 4-2 lead.

Trinity Prep’s Luke Barrett won the shot put (46-feet, 6-inches) and discus throw (145-11) to lead the Saints to the Class 2A, District 8 title at Lake Highland. Janiyah Towsend won the 100 (11.96) and 200 (24.78) and ran a leg on the winning 4x400 relay team to lead Jones to the girls title.
