Take care of Earth

-

We devoted this past Sunday to ruminating on our beautiful and irreplaceable home — Planet Earth. It’s a pity that our leaders’ stance on global warming being a hoax has resulted in our withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement.

Are we that naïve to overlook that human activity has no role in Earth’s climate changing drastically? We are making strides in other scientific discoveries, but we’re overlooking that in a few decades, it will be hard to live and breathe on Earth. I guess that’s why our space program has a fixation on Mars, and it seems more research is aimed at trying to find other inhabitable planets across galaxies rather than saving our only home.

I am a Muslim, and Islam teaches me to cherish and protect this planet. Prophet Muhammad stated, “The world is green and beautiful and God has appointed you his stewards over it.” Thus, it is our responsibility to care for this planet and its resources as religious obligation. It is incumbent upon us to be grateful to our Benevolent God for providing us a perfect planet for our needs. We must appreciate what we have and show by our actions that we would cherish it for all times.

So let’s adopt any necessary measures to do what we can to protect the environment. Let’s reduce, reuse and recycle. Let’s conserve water. Let’s do the basics in our power to safeguard our home. At least we owe this much to our Mother Earth and future generations. Nadia Ahmad Round Rock, Texas
