National Pigs in a Blanket Day: How to celebrate dish locally

- By Cassie Armstrong

What do you think of when you hear the phrase, “pigs in a blanket?”

If the vision that appears in your head is one of cute little piggies, wrapped in fuzzy blankets, you are certainly not a comfort-food connoisseur.

Today is National Pigs in a Blanket Day, a day in which we celebrate a favorite comfort food — pork sausage (or hotdogs) wrapped in a pastry dough and baked to golden crust.

Meat stuffed in bread has always been an easy way to have a filling meal.

The origin of “pigs in a blanket” dates back as far as the 17th century. For the modern invention of this recipe, however, the earliest written records of it are in the “Cooking For Kids” cookbook, which was produced by Betty Crocker in 1957.
