How to celebrate National Garden Meditation Day

- By Cassie Armstrong

Need to slow down, relax and take some time for yourself? Then today is for you — National Garden Meditation Day, which is observed annually on May 3. Working in the garden, tending to the plants and the flowers or resting quietly on a bench on a beautiful day in the garden are all forms of meditation.

Don’t have a garden of your own to enjoy? You’re in luck — because in the state of Florida, there are 164 state parks and 10 state trails that encompass more than 800,000 acres of land. Florida also boasts countless county and community parks. Or, you can check these out:

The semi-tropical and tropical gardens that contain nearly 50 acres of landscaped grounds and lakes, with meandering trails shaded by 200-year-old oaks and forests of camellias will certainly soothe your soul. 1920 N. Forest Ave., Orlando.

You’ll discover much to enjoy in the gardens’ 47 acres, with hiking trails, creek, boardwalk, tall pine trees, greenhouse, butterfly garden, and a pond that’s home to turtles, fish and wading birds. 1300 S. Denning Drive, Winter Park.

The 3-acre garden, dating back to 1949, is a pastoral oasis within the City of Winter Park. The sculpture garden is home to many inspiring native Florida and subtropical species. 633 Osceola Ave., Winter Park.

Home of the Singing Tower, it boasts a meandering, historic landscape garden designed to be a contemplative, informal woodland setting, offering tranquil resting spots. 1151 Tower Blvd., Lake Wales.

If garden meditation isn’t for you, May 3 is also: Chocolate Custard Day, Lumpy Rug Day, Day of Prayer, Day of Reason, Paranormal Day, Raspberry Popover Day, San Architect Day, Specialty-Abled Pets Day, Textiles Day, Two Different Colored Shoes Day and World Password Day.
