‘Glass Menagerie’ performances onstage in English and Spanish
Tennessee Williams fans have two ways to see “The Glass Menagerie” this week — in English or in Spanish.
The Sonnentag Theatre at the IceHouse in Mount Dora is wrapping up its 70th season with the acclaimed drama, which runs through Sunday. Meanwhile, Mad Cow Theatre’s Teatro Espanol will stage a reading of the Spanish adaptation — “El Zoo de Cristal” — at 7:30 tonight.
In the play, Tom Wingfield recounts moments in his stormy life with his manipulative mother Amanda and fragile sister Laura. She collects the glass animal figurines that give the play its name, and her gentle world is rocked by a social call from Tom’s co-worker, Jim.
At the IceHouse, David W. Clevinger directs Jerrod Hubbard as Tom, Agata Sokolska as Laura, Bradley Hubbell as Jim, and Marylin McGinnis as Amanda. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. tonight and Wednesday; 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday; and 2 p.m. Sunday. The theater is at 1100 N. Unser St., Mount Dora.
Tickets are $20-$22 ($10-$15 for students); go to icehousetheatre.com or call 352-383-4616.
At Mad Cow, Eliana Stratico will direct the reading of León Mirlas’s Spanish translation.
The cast includes Miguel Salas as Tom, Giovanna Quezada as Laura, Jerald Spear as Jim, and Stratico as Amanda.
“The story is inherent to the intimate world of people and for that reason it does not lose validity,” Stratico says. “It is a story by an American author but we can all relate to it. That is what makes it a classic, and doing it in Spanish is a unique opportunity to bring this material to the Hispanic community, something that is rarely done in the United States.”
Tonight’s Spanish performance will be at the theater, 54 W. Church St. Orlando.
Tickets are $12; get them at madcowtheatre.com or call 407-297-8788.
