Don’t blame first responders

- Daniel J. Carroll DeLand

The Pulse nightclub shooting was a tragedy and should not have happened. The emergency responders who received a call about the gunman and people being shot at the nightclub did get to the scene, and helped those injured. The police got in position around the club, not knowing how many shooters were inside and relying on people inside telling the police that there was only one shooter.

Now some of those who were injured are suing the emergency personnel for being too slow in arriving. I think the responsibility lies with the owners of the Pulse nightclub, especially if they did not hire the proper number of security people required for the large number of people at this event. Who was working in security at the main entrance that night, and how many people entered the club, and left but returned? Did security check each person?

Whether security was adequate that evening should be investigated thoroughly, and blame should not be placed on those who put themselves in harm’s way every day.
