Club owners victims

- Mary Shaheen Longwood

An apology to Barbara and Rosario Poma on behalf of every one of us, who on the slippery slope of apathetic complicity allowed this egregious suit filed by attorney Keith Altman.

Imagine that you are the owner of a small, inclusive club with no legal requirement to provide security beyond the basic. Then a horrible event happens costing monetary and emotional strain beyond what many would ever endure. You stand tall, hold up your head and vow to fight the good fight, only to be dragged into court for not doing something you were not required to do.

Make no mistake: The burden of being sued, win or lose, will cost the Pomas — who are also victims of the shooting, yet again.

Lawsuits like this one should be dismissed and the costs reimbursed to the defendants. Otherwise, we send a message to all small club, bar, restaurant owners that this could happen to you. Terrorists win.

We should all remember Altman’s name and know that if he prevails, we will all lose.

Speak out, folks. This is the world we are building.
