Dems blast Miller for holding fundraiser on Pulse anniversary
Orange County Democrats ripped into state Rep. Mike Miller on Tuesday for holding a fundraiser in Miami on the second anniversary of the Pulse shooting.
Miller, R-Winter Park, running in the GOP primary for the congressional seat held by U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy, has scheduled a fundraising reception for Tuesday night at the Veza Sur Brewing Co. in Miami, according to a post on his Facebook page.
In a statement, Orange County Democratic chair Wes Hodge called Miller “reprehensible” for holding the event on the anniversary of the nightclub shooting that killed 49.
“Actions speak louder than words, and the fact that Representative Miller has decided to leave his district to grab cash instead of mourning with his constituents tells us all we need to know about his priorities,” Hodge said.
Miller spokeswoman Dana Loncar said Miller was attending an event at noon Tuesday commemorating the Pulse anniversary at First Methodist Church in Orlando.
“He is here,” she said. “He doesn’t have an official role in the official event this evening [at Pulse], but he will be at the noon event.”
Loncar cited the legislation Miller filed to provide PTSD support for first responders to the Pulse tragedy and his resolution declaring Tuesday as Pulse Memorial Day.
Abigail Hirn, spokeswoman for Scott Sturgill, Miller’s GOP foe in the August Republican congressional primary, Scott Sturgill, said, “Sometimes there are things more important than fundraisers. Those can be rescheduled.”
