Superb scholar-athletes
Oviedo’s Ethan Fields and Winter Park seniors Erin Wright and Matthew
Kuczajda were recognized as part of the Florida Dairy Farmers academic all-state team during a Florida High School Athletic Association banquet Monday in Gainesville.
Fields lettered in both cross country and track and field at Oviedo while ranking second academically in his graduating class.
A team captain on the 2017 Class 4A cross country state championship team, Fields will attend Harvard University to study government, politics and contemporary music while taking part in the dual degree program at Berklee College of Music.
Wright was a team captain on Winter Park’s water polo, weightlifting and swim teams while also performing over 500 hours of community service. She represented her school at the state leadership conference as part of the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program and has plans to study neuroscience and behavioral psychology at the University of Florida.
Kuczajda ran for Winter Park’s boys cross country team and on a fifth-place 4x800-meter relay at the track and field state meet.
He was also a member of the marching and concert bands throughout high school and recognized as an all-county trumpet player and most outstanding veteran marcher. Kuczajda will study aerospace engineering at the Air Force Academy.
