Spirit announces major expansion from OIA
Spirit announced a major boost in flights from Orlando to U.S. and international destinations.
As one of its largest expansions, revealed Thursday, Spirit will grow to have as many as 49 daily departures from Orlando International to 38 destinations, including 11 in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Operating from Orlando International for 25 years, Spirit now has as many as 39 daily flights from the airport, where it ranks as the sixth-busiest airline.
“Orlando is now one of our largest markets, and we have no
plans on stopping growth,” said Bob Fornaro, the airline’s chief executive officer.
Spirit’s expansion will include service to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, that starts on Oct. 4; San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on Oct. 5; and San Salvador, El Salvador, on Oct. 6.
The airline expects to roll out its new flights through November, completing its expansion that month with new service to Cartagena, Colombia, and Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Spirit has international flights from six other cities, including Fort Lauderdale.
Earlier this week, Spirit unveiled new flights from Orlando to Asheville and Greensboro, N.C., and to Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Spirit has more than 500 daily flights to destinations in the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean.
Also Thursday, Interjet Airlines announced the start of daily, nonstop flights from Orlando International to Mexico City.
Interjet Airlines is based in Mexico City, and it provides service to more than 50 destinations in eight countries.
