2018 movies: The favorites, the forgettable and what’s next
COMMENTARY villain. I’m waiting for the sequel.
Ethan Hawke is stellar as a priest grappling with loss, faith and morality. I thought I had it figured out until I talked with my son who had a totally different ... but equally plausible ... take.
A cowboy with a head injury contemplates life after the rodeo. A story well told with exquisite cinematography and a cast of unknowns.
I don’t see this sweet, charming documentary about Rollins College alum Fred Rogers and his “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” show dropping off this list. for women of a certain age, but the men were laughing, too.
Another movie about friends, this time about folks who meet regularly to play games. Is their latest gathering something different?
Melissa McCarthy cracks me up and she continues her funny streak in this story about a woman who returns to college to get her degree. Did I mention she and her daughter are at the same school? Laughter — and some groaning — ensues.
This allfemale heist movie was enjoyable, but not the best installment of the series. (Aug. 3): Winnie-the-Pooh. Enough said.
(Oct.12): Ryan Gosling portrays Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. This biopic reunites Gosling with “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle. I wasn’t wild about “La La Land,” but I like Gosling and Chazelle’s “Whiplash” was my favorite movie of 2014. So I have high hopes.
(Nov. 21): Steve Carell portrays a survivor of a brutal beating who takes a rather unusual road to recovery. It’s directed by Robert Zemeckis (“Back to the Future,” “Cast Away,” “Forrest Gump”), so it could be an epic success.
