is on leave after a video online shows him throwing a handcuffed man to the ground at a bar early Sunday.

A Sanford police officer has been placed on leave after video surfaced online that showed him throwing a handcuffed man to the ground at a bar early Sunday.

In a statement, the Sanford Police Department said the officer, Adam Johnson, will remain on paid leave as it investigates the incident at The Barn, a popular bar on French Avenue.

“All aspects of the incident, including the events before, during and after are currently being reviewed in order to determine if any violations of policy occurred,” police Chief Cecil Smith said.

The video, which was being shared on Facebook earlier this week, shows officers scuffling with multiple people inside the bar about 2 a.m. Sunday and taking two into custody.

One man is seen being dragged to the ground and handcuffed.

Later in the video, the second man — who by that point was already in handcuffs — is thrown forcefully to the ground by John son, prompting a stunned reaction and shouting from other patrons.

A police report said the incident began when another officer working off-duty at the bar saw one of the men, Morrell Byrd, 30, standing on a table and punching the bar’s air conditioning unit.

The officer said he told Byrd to get off the table, but Byrd cursed at him and refused, then resisted as the officer tried to pull him down.

The second man, Christopher Hills, 33, pushed the officer and interfered with the arrest, the officer wrote in his report.

Hills and Byrd were arrested on charges of battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence, records show. Both have since posted bond and been released.

Smith pledged SPD would be “transparent and forthcoming” during the probe. “We ask for everyone’s patience during this process as we conduct a thorough and complete investigation,” he said.
