Carnival Cruise’s Triumph to become Sunrise after overhaul

Carnival Cruise Line is giving another one of its older ships a massive overhaul and a new name.

Carnival Triumph will go into dry dock in spring 2019 and come out as Carnival Sunrise.

This is a similar approach to what the cruise line did when Carnival Destiny became Carnival Sunshine in 2013.

Carnival Triumph, then, will become part of the what the cruise line is calling its Sunshine Class of ships. The once-named Carnival Destiny, a sister ship to Carnival Triumph, became Carnival Sunshine after an overhaul in 2013.

The overhaul that will begin in Cadiz, Spain on March 1, 2019 will take place just shy of 20 years since the ship was originally launched. When it returns, it will sail out of Virginia, New York and Fort Lauderdale.

This will be the third dry dock for the ship in seven years. The ship had already received some of the cruise line’s more notable venue additions in its last dry dock in 2016, but also in 2013 after an engine-fire at sea left the ship without power for several days and it remained out of service for several months.

This new makeover will take two months, and cost $200 million, according to the cruise line.

Enhancements will include updating the ship with the line’s more popular mainstays including the newest dining venue: Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que, which debuted on Carnival Horizon this year.

Other dining venues coming to the ship include Cucina del Capitano, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse, Bonsai Express, JavaBlue Café and the popular — and free — handtossed pizza venue in the Lido Marketplace, Pizzeria del Capitano.

New bar venues include RedFrog Pub, Piano Bar 88, Limelight Lounge and Liquid Lounge.

A new SportSquare will feature a ropes course and basketball court as well as foosball, pool, ping-pong and a nine-hole mini-golf course.

The water slide fun will be increased to add a 203-foot-long AquaTunnel slide to the already existing 212-foot-long Twister slide as well as the addition of a 75-gallon tipping bucket in the expanded WaterWorks play area.

Also coming will be the Serenity adults-only area of the ship, an expanded spa and more retail space.

On the stateroom side, two of the ship’s Captain’s Suites will be redesigned with floor-to-ceiling windows and offer extended balcony grand suites while all of the staterooms will get new color schemes.

“The introduction of Carnival Sunrise will provide our guests with an array of exciting dining, bar and entertainment choices,” said Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. “The new Carnival Sunrise is part of our multi-billiondollar ship enhancement program that is transforming our fleet on an unprecedented scale.”

The renamed ship will begin service April 29, 2019 out of Norfolk, Virginia for five- to sevennight trips, then to New York for a summer schedule of four- to 14-night voyages and then reposition to Florida’s Port Everglades in October 2019 for four- and fivenight duties to the Bahamas and the Caribbean, including Cuba.
