No free lunch for life for P.R. evacuees

-

I have seen it more than once: When things get tough in Puerto Rico, let’s go to the U.S. mainland. This conversation of the Federal Emergency Management Agency supporting that group until the end of August is way more than I would expect from any government, and it does have to end at some point.

I think many left Puerto Rico because they had nothing and didn’t want to stick around to help clean up their homeland. On the other hand, they have nothing here. But once again there is that word “entitlement.” I feel for those people who had to endure nature’s wrath, but I also feel for those who stayed home to help rebuild.

I really do not understand the mentality of those who just expect to show up somewhere and have everything provided for them. I would never expect that, and I am sure there are a lot mainland U.S. people who feel the same. At the same time people in Puerto Rico are making a fuss, the people in the Florida Keys, who were also hit hard, go about cleaning up. They got little news coverage, and fussing was minimal. They picked themselves up and worked together to get things back to normal, though it still isn’t.

Once things settle down in Puerto Rico and they get close to normal, I guarantee you that those who exited their homeland will return there. With the hard work done and the struggles over, it will be more like home.
