Dozier, Machado gang up on Astros

-

LOS ANGELES — Brian Dozier belted a two-run double and Manny Machado had three hits and scored twice Sunday as the Dodgers defeated the Astros 3-2.

With the Dodgers struggling for offense against the team that beat them in last year’s World Series, the new additions came through. However, the Astros took the weekend series by winning the first two games.

George Springer and Tony Kemp homered for the Astros, but Springer exited in the third inning when he hurt his left thumb sliding into second.

Dodgers starter Walker Buehler gave up two runs on four hits in 51⁄3 innings, striking out eight. Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 31st save.

Dozier has five extra-base hits and seven RBIs in five games with the Dodgers.

New reliever Roberto Osuna did not pitch in his first game on the Astros roster. Osuna served a 75-game suspension for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy.

The All-Star closer, acquired from the Blue Jays, addressed his new teammates for 10 minutes in a closed-door pregame meeting.

“I was very happy to meet them and very happy to be a part of this World Series team,” Osuna said through a translator. “I will do my best to win another World Series this year.”

Asked if he could shed some light on why he was suspended, Osuna replied, “Not right now.”

At 23, Osuna is the youngest pitcher to reach 100 saves.

“This was a tough decision,” GM Jeff Luhnow said. “My focus was on giving Roberto a second chance. I understand that it was going to raise conversation, and I’m OK with that.”

Before the game, Astros righthander Lance McCullers Jr. went on the disabled list because of discomfort in his right elbow.
