- By Steven Lemongello

Democratic congressional candidate Nancy Soderberg released her first TV ad Thursday in her race to flip U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis’s seat.

The ad, “Hurdles,” highlights “the obstacles Soderberg overcame, both in her national security career and her battle to keep healthcare after being diagnosed with a preexisting condition,” her campaign said in a statement.

The ad cites her work as Deputy National Security Advisor under President Bill Clinton, which included negotiating peace in Northern Ireland and counter-terrorism.

“I helped bring Northern Ireland’s opposing sides together to secure peace,” Soderberg says in the ad. “I was one of the first to say, ‘Let’s get Bin Laden.’ ”

She also talks about being denied health insurance because of her diabetes.

“Let’s bring both parties together to deal with hurdles like unaffordable health care, protecting Social Security and Medicare. Hurdles don’t faze me. I’m about solutions.”

Soderberg faces radiologist Stephen Sevigny and attorney John Upchurch in the Aug. 28 Democratic primary for District 6, which includes northeast Lake County and all of Volusia County.

On the GOP side, former state Rep. Fred Costello, retired Army Col. Michael Waltz and businessman John Ward face each other to succeed DeSantis, who is running for governor.
