Fast start propels DeLand

A thrilling finish helped upstart DeLand make a huge jump in the Sentinel Super 16 football rankings entering the third week of the regular season. The Bulldogs (2-0) are up six spots from No. 12 to No. 6 after winning 20-17 Friday over then-No. 3 Seminole.

Seminole (1-1) fell six spots to No. 9 and West Orange (1-1) dropped from sixth to eighth after losing at home 49-42 to Rockledge. Wekiva strengthen­ed its hold on the top spot by going on the road and defeating a defending Georgia state champion Saturday night. The Mustangs forced four turnovers and got three rushing touchdowns from Brandon Hill in a 28-14 win over North Gwinnett. Deltona (2-0) moved in the rankings for the first time this season at No. 15. Boone (1-1) fell from No. 13 to out of the rankings.

The Super 16 is made up of teams in Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake and west Volusia counties. Team record and upcoming opponents are included in the rankings. Friday at No. 1 Wekiva (2-0).

Bulldogs start 2-0 for first time since 2011 after pulling out wild 20-17 win at then-No. 3 Seminole (1-1). Friday at No. 15 Deltona (2-0).

Panthers held Timber Creek to eight yards rushing while outgaining Wolves 432-120 in total yards in 25-7 win. Friday vs. No. 8 West Orange (1-1).

Darrell Harding and Giuliano Baber each caught two touchdown passes for Warriors in 49-42 loss vs. Rockledge (2-0). Friday at No. 7 Dr. Phillips (1-1).

Seminoles turned ball over twice on fumbles, Grayden Krull caught two TD passes in 20-17 loss to DeLand (2-0). Friday vs. Flagler Palm Coast (2-0).

Christophe­r Hampton intercepte­d two passes and five players scored for Tigers in 40-19 win vs. Oak Ridge (0-2). Friday vs. Colonial (0-1).

Caleb Blake intercepte­d a pass and returned it 55 yards for a score in 21-14 win vs. then-No. 16 Lake Brantley (1-1). Sept. 14 at Severn Archbishop Spalding, Md. Off last week. Friday vs. Tallahasse­e Godby (2-0). Ethan Johnson caught nine passes for 156 yards and four touchdowns in 42-27 win vs. then-No. 13 Boone (1-1). Friday at Freedom (1-1). Senior Caleb Caslow led Patriots with 18 total tackles in 21-14 loss at then-No. 10 Bishop Moore (1-1). Friday at Winter Haven (2-0). Lions compiled 311 total yards, including 206 through the air to eight players, in 34-10 loss at then-No. 8 Winter Park (2-0). Friday at Hagerty (1-1).
