The Garden Theatre
in Winter Garden has extended its opening run of “Gypsy” because the musical is doing so well.
Everything’s coming up roses for the Garden Theatre’s production of the musical “Gypsy.” The Winter Garden theater’s seasonopener has extended its run for a weekend because of “overwhelming demand,” the theater says.
Originally scheduled to close Sept. 16, “Gypsy” will now run through Sept. 22. An additional three performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22.
The classic musical tells the back story of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famed striptease artist of the early 20th century, with the emphasis squarely on her overbearing mother, Rose. Andrea Canny stars as Mama Rose and has won critical acclaim for her performance — I deemed her performance an out-and-out “triumph.”
The 1959 musical features music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents. Among its wellknown songs are “Let Me Entertain You,” “You Gotta Get a Gimmick,” “Some People” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.”
Tom Vazzana directs the Garden Production, which also stars Andrea Stack as Gypsy, Michael Hartson as Herbie, Grace Flaherty as June and Orlando Ballet’s Arcadian Broad as Tulsa.
Tickets for the additional performances are on sale now. They are $35, with discounts available for students, seniors, military personnel and groups. Tickets may be purchased by calling 407-877-4736, visiting the Garden Theatre Box Office at 160 W. Plant St. in Winter Garden, or going online to gardentheatre.org.
