Red Sox rally past Braves for sweep

Brandon Phillips hit a 2-out 2-run homer in the 9th inning, highlighting Boston’s huge comeback in a 9-8 win Wednesday to sweep a 3-game series over host Atlanta.

Red Sox: 2B Brandon Phillips hit a two-out, two-run HR in the ninth, highlighting his season debut and capping the Red Sox’s biggest comeback of the season in a 9-8 win over the Braves in Atlanta. The Red Sox overcame a late six-run deficit to sweep the three-game interleague series. Phillips, 37, sat out the first half of this year and was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday.

Marlins, Phillies: RHP Sandy Alcantara pitched shutout ball into the eighth in his second career start and the Marlins beat the Phillies 2-1 in Miami. The Phillies lost for the fourth time in five games but stayed within three game of the first-place Braves in the NL East.

Cardinals: Matt Adams homered twice against the team that traded him last month, Marcell Ozuna tied his career-high with four hits and the Cardinals held off the Nationals 7-6 in Washington. Carlos Martinez worked the final two innings for his first save since 2014, getting three straight outs in the ninth after the first two batters reached.

Extra innings: The Blue Jays scored seven runs in the first inning en route to a 10-3 win over the Rays in Toronto . ...
