Oviedo takes down Hagerty 3-0

Two of the nation’s top-ranked volleyball teams — from the same city, no less — met on Thursday night, and the first round went to the Oviedo Lions.

Utilizing superior speed, net play and stellar defense, No. 19 Oviedo (5-1) overpowere­d host and seventh-ranked Hagerty 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-18) in the first meeting between the crosstown rivals this season. Both schools are coming off successful seasons in which they advanced deep into the playoffs, earning them national rankings from Prepvolley­ball.com.

“It’s a very nice win,” said Oviedo coach “especially this early in the season against a very incredibly talented team. I’m very proud of the girls the way they stuck to the game plan tonight.”

Although Hagerty (4-1) held an obvious size advantage, the Huskies led only once in the first set (1-0) and fell victim to a 12-0 Oviedo run that put them behind 19-5. The Lions’

helped clinch the openingset win with a pair of blistering kills.

Hagerty regained its composure in the second set. There were six ties before Oviedo reeled off a 6-1 run to take a 13-8 lead. The Huskies crept to within 17-14 but could get no closer as the Lions ripped off an 8-1 run to win it.

Strong play by staked Hagerty to an 8-5 lead in the third set, but once again Oviedo rallied. The schools battled back and forth before the Lions used a 4-0 run to take a 15-11 lead. Kills by and clinched the win for Basketball coaches Bishop Moore.

Lake Mary, fresh off a national high school invitation­al girls golf victory in Arizona last weekend, faces another loaded field at its own annual Central Florida Tournament of Champions on Saturday.
