Port Orange man accused of assaulting woman, son over ‘Twinkie the Kid’ doll

Flagler County deputies arrested a man on Saturday who assaulted a woman and her son over a Funko Pop! doll, according to an affidavit.

Charles Porter, 34, of Port Orange was arrested on two counts of battery and one count of burglary, according to the affidavit.

Sandra Montgomery, 64, and her son, Paul Roth, 41, had driven to a Palm Coast Target superstore to buy a “Twinkie the Kid” Pop doll. The doll had a “chase” sticker on the packaging, which sells for more than the market price.

Target sells the doll for about $10, but people are selling it for up to $200 online.

Montgomery and Roth couldn’t find the Pop! doll on store shelves, but Montgomery saw one in a storage container, according to the affidavit.

A Target employee retrieved the item but told Montgomery he could only sell her one because people were lined up outside the store to buy the doll.

After purchasing the doll, Montgomery walked to her vehicle while Roth remained inside purchasing other items. As Roth exited the store he said he noticed a man, later identified as Porter, stalking him.

Porter began yelling about how his mother had purchased the toy, then punched Roth in the back of the head, the affidavit detailed.

Porter opened their car door, punched Montgomery in the face, grabbed the bag containing the doll and fled in a black Honda, deputies said. He was caught soon afterward.

Porter admitted to Flagler deputies that he grabbed the doll from Montgomery’s car and told her that she was “wrong,” according to the affidavit. He denied assaulting Montgomery.

However, witnesses from the Target parking lot confirmed Roth and Montgomery’s story, as stated in the affidavit. Roth also recorded the incident on his smartphone.

Deputies took Porter to the Flagler County Jail with bond set at $13,000.
