Bucs’ solid line play started in camp

The Bucs’ offense has put up 75 points in the first two games and a big reason is the protection from the offensive line, which sharpened its skills against the Tampa defense in training camp.

BASKETBALL:

The Spurs hired TV analyst and 14-year NBA veteran Brent Barry, 46, to their front office, naming him VP of basketball operations. Barry won titles in 2005 and 2007 with the Spurs. He replaces Monty Williams, who left to become an assistant coach with the 76ers . ... Reggie Hearn scored 12 points to help the U.S. rout host Panama 78-48 in the second round of qualifying for the 2019 FIBA World Cup. COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said he sent letters and had conversati­ons with families of players as a step toward containing and repairing the scandal that led to his three-game suspension, a saga he describes as “a window in time I made an error.” Meyer acknowledg­ed in a news conference during which reporters questioned him about his mismanagem­ent of fired assistant Zach Smith and his resulting suspension after a university investigat­ion that the program’s reputation has suffered and said he hopes more clarity about what happened will help mitigate the damage. Meyer will be on the sideline for the first time this season Saturday when the No. 4 Buckeyes host Tulane . ... Ohio State junior DE Nick Bosa will miss the game against Tulane after suffering an abdominal and groin injury during last weekend’s game against TCU . ... Michael Robinson, the father of UCLA QB Dorian ThompsonRo­binson, on Sunday criticized coach Chip Kelly on Twitter. In replies to tweets from Bruin Report Online that were critical of his son’s play for the 0-3 Bruins, Robinson tweeted: “It is all about the coaching, lousy coaching and play calling... Coaching that is so bad that it demands closed practices... Million dollar coach who bares no responsibi­lity... Just random observatio­ns from a frustrated dad!” ... Former Florida State QB Bailey Hockman announced on Twitter that he will transfer to North Carolina State. Hockman, who left the Seminoles last month, redshirted last season and will sit out this season. He will have four years of eligibilit­y remaining . ... Florida coach Dan Mullen said sophomore RB Malik Davis will miss an “extended period” after breaking his left foot during the Gators’ win over Colorado State last weekend. Also, Mullen said junior LB David Reese II will return after missing the first three games of the season with an ankle injury. Reese led the Gators with 102 tackles last year . ... Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said freshman Malik Cunningham will start at quarterbac­k against Virginia on Saturday. Cunningham replaced an ineffectiv­e Jawon Pass during the second quarter of the Cardinals’ 20-17 win over Western Kentucky last weekend. NHL:

The Panthers named F Aleksander Barkov their captain. Barkov, a 23-year-old from Finland, replaces Derek MacKenzie, who held the role for the last two seasons but will retire at the end of the season. SOCCER:

Cristhian Stuani scored in each half as host Girona ended Celta Vigo’s unbeaten La Liga run with a 3-2 victory. Third-place Celta had a draw and two wins in its first two league matches. It was the second straight win for Girona, which moved into sixth place in its second season in Spain’s top division . ... The Earthquake­s fired first-year coach Mikael Stahre. At 2-9-3, the MLS club is last in the Western Conference. Steve Ralston, a former MLS player who joined the Earthquake­s as an assistant in 2015, was named interim coach.
