Dying pets deserve your love

Pets give you unconditio­nal love every breath they take. It’s only fair that you reciprocat­e by being with them when they draw their last breath.

The compassion­ate logic seems to escape a number of pet owners, caught up in the painful and emotional chaos of letting go. It’s a precarious road that some prefer not to take. They drop their pet off at the vet to be euthanized and take a detour home to mourn the loss.

“I beg you DO NOT LEAVE THEM,” an anonymous vet wrote in a social media post that went viral recently.

“DO not make them transition from life to death in a room full of strangers in a place they don’t like,” continued the message shared by Hillcrest Veterinary Clinic in South Africa.

“They search every face in the room for their loved person. They don’t understand why you left them when they are sick, scared, old, or dying from cancer and they need your comfort.”

I know that profuse pain personally, having seen two cats and four dogs, all Boxers, cross over the Rainbow Bridge over the last 12 years or so.

It sucks. The pain cuts deep into your soul, and it is impossible to shake. That said, my wife and I would never, ever consider leaving them alone in the final moments of their lives.

Our pain eventually subsides. But the memories of the smiles and the face licks and the cuddles and all the goofy moments when they told you they loved you in their own language will be eternally yours.
