Colton Scharfield booted a 20-yard field goal with 16 seconds to play Friday to cap a come-from-behind win for host West Orange over topranked Wekiva.

The Warriors (5-1, 1-0 in 8A-District 3), ranked No. 7 in the Sentinel Super 16, trailed 22-7 early in the third quarter before rallying for a 30-29 win over No. 1 Wekiva (4-1, 0-1).

Nemea Hall rushed for two touchdowns inside the final four minutes of the game in what was a 16-point fourth quarter aided by an on-side kick recovery.

After Hall scored the second time from five yards out, he was stuffed on a twopoint conversion attempt up the middle that left West Orange in a 29-27 hole with two minutes, 26 seconds to play.

Wekiva then went threeand-out to give the Warriors one last chance. Scharfield’s field goal was set up off completions from freshman quarterback Julian Calvez to Hall and Jaylon Carlies.

“Nemea got me down the field and in the position I needed to be, and I made the kick,” Scharfield said. “[My teammates] knew I was going to make the kick and I knew it, too.”

West Orange forced four turnovers and manages to tally 236 yards of offense after gaining just 18 yards in the first half.

Calvez replaced starter Elijah Stimmell on West Orange’s first possession of the third quarter when the senior was injured following an 8-yard run. Calvez connected with Carlies for a 7-yard touchdown in the corner of the end zone three plays later to cut Wekiva’s lead to 22-13.

Supreme Richardson, who led all rushers with 143 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, extended Wekiva’s advantage to 29-14 on a short touchdown run just over three minutes left in the third. But he fumbled on the next possession for the Mustangs and they never recovered from there.

After Wekiva was forced to go three-and-out on its next possession, everything started falling into place for West Orange.

Calvez completed seven passes and made plays with his legs on the final three possessions, all of which ended in points.

“I just thank my teammates, because without them I wouldn’t be here,” Calvez said. “My offensive line did a great job, my receivers did a good job catching the ball, my runners did a good job running the ball and my defense did a good job stopping everything.”

The tough trek for West Orange continues over the next two weeks with backto-back home games.
