Oviedo wins in final minute

-

Oviedo quarterback Morgan Mitchell returned from a first-half knee injury to connect with Daniel McNamara on a 12-yard touchdown pass with 57 seconds to go as the Sentinel Super 16 No. 13 Lions pulled out a dramatic 22-21 win over No. 11 Lake Mary on Friday.

The Lions (4-1, 2-0 in 8A, District 2) blocked a 38-yard field-goal try as time expired to wrap up the win on the road. Lake Mary fell to 3-2 and 2-1 in the district.

Mitchell left the game just before halftime and the word was that he was questionable to return. He did just that on the Lions second drive of the second half and ended up leading the 60-yard drive to win the game.

Oviedo running back Keonte Coffie played a huge role in the comeback as he led all rushers with 20 carries for 105 yards. His biggest play was a 26-yard reception on fourth-and-four to set up the game-winning strike. 21-0 first quarter lead. On the opening drive, the Pioneers fumbled a punt snap, setting up a Canaan Mobley oneyard TD run. Bryan Bell-Anderson picked off Dre Curate’s first pass on the next drive and, on the very next play, Fields sprinted 76 yards for a score.

No. 8 Seminole shrugged off three turnovers and defended well against No. 15 Lake Brantley’s veer offense to post its third consecutive shutout, 39-0, over the visiting Patriots in Class 8A, District 2.

After Brantley’s Nolan Sanders intercepted Seminole quarterback Timmy McClain in the end zone with 55 seconds remaining in the second quarter, ’Noles defender Hilton Mobley turned the tide on the next play. Mobley intercepted Lake Brantley quarterback Noah Hudak at midfield, broke a tackle, kept his balance and zig-zagged his way through more defenders for a 46-yard touchdown to give the Seminoles (4-1, 2-0) a 21-0 halftime lead.

McClain, a sophomore, finished 7-of-10 passing for 228 yards and three TDs for Semninole (4-1, 2-0) but also threw two interceptions.

Shorthanded Lake Brantley (2-4, 1-2) played without DL Joshua Roberts and LB Luke Nemethy. Patriots coach David Delfiacco said his team has had problems with locker-room bacterial infections and was down to 28 players for practice at one point this week.

Nate Jefferson scored four touchdowns as Lyman (3-3) improved to 2-1 in 8A-2 on Thursday with a 42-13 win over Orange City University.

Jadan Robinson, Treveon Bouie and Avarius Sparrow scored rushing TDs, and the Tigers’ defense forced five turnovers to lead Jones (4-1, 1-0) to its fourth consecutive victory.

When Evans quarterback Diondre Crooke sliced up the middle on a 6-yard touchdown run for the Trojans, it pulled Evans (1-4) to within 22-14 of host Apopka (5-1) in the middle of the third quarter on Friday.

The No. 4 Blue Darters responded with a 46-yard scoring run by Akeem Brown three plays later and from there it was all Apopka as the Darters dominated en route to a 52-14 victory over the Trojans.

Foundation Academy (6-0), which is ranked second in the AP Class 2A state rankings, was handed a forfeit win over The Nation Christian Academy, a firstyear program from Port St. Lucie. Foundation hosts also-unbeaten Windermere Prep (5-0) next Friday.

Windermere Prep won 41-17 on Friday at Orangewood Christian (3-2).

The Master’s Academy (5-0), which joins Windermere Prep among the front-runners in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference, won 49-25 vs. visiting Tampa Cambridge (3-3).
