Cops kill man at hospital
A man was killed by three Orlando police officers at Orlando Regional Medical Center early Monday after telling staff he had a gun and would shoot anyone who came near him, Chief John Mina said.
The suspect — identified as 33-year-old Brian Baker — was shot after making a movement toward his waistband, Mina told reporters during a press conference. Baker was not armed, Mina said.
No other injuries were reported. ORMC’s emergency department was placed on lockdown because of the incident.
Baker doesn’t appear to have ties to the region, investigators said, but he had a bus ticket showing he was traveling from West Palm Beach to Kentucky. He was in Orlando on a layover, police said.
Baker made claims about being a suspect in an ongoing homicide case, Mina said. OPD did not know the case to which he was referring and is looking into the claim.
The man also made statements about “ending today right here, right now,” Mina said.
Police and crisis negotiators were called to the emergency room at 5:33 a.m. after Baker threatened hospital staff and said he had a gun.
A woman named Sandy, who declined to provide her full name, said she was in the emergency room with her daughter when she heard someone say he had a gun. She said police asked to see his hands and then cleared the hallway.
“There were patients close by in the hospital, so a decision was made to approach the suspect,” Mina said. “He made movements consistent with pulling and reaching for a firearm, and he was shot and killed by three officers.”
The officers were placed on temporary, paid administrative leave and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be investigating, according to Mina. The state agency investigates each of OPD’s officer-involved shootings.
