A huge weekend ahead

Play starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, leading up to semifinals at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 championship matches.
District tournaments start Monday. Area district finals will be played next Thursday at Oviedo, West Orange, Winter Park, Spruce Creek, Olympia, Gateway, East Ridge, St. Cloud, Deltona, Windermere Prep, Orangewood and Geneva School.
Lake Minneola meet blows up: Cancellation of the FSU Invitational crosscountry meet due to Hurricane Michael has transformed Saturday’s Last Chance Invite at Lake Minneola High School from a small local event into a major meet.
Many of the power teams that were scheduled to go to Tallahassee this weekend to run on the state-meet course are now entered in the Last Chance races, which start at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Originally expecting 18 teams, meet organizers anticipate about 60 teams ready to rev up for upcoming district, region and state races.
The meet is expected to showcase the top four Sentinel Super Six girls crosscountry teams: No. 1 Montverde Academy, No. 2 Lake Brantley, No. 3 Trinity Prep and No. 4 Circle Christian.
The meet is also expected to have two Super Six boys teams: No. 2 Windermere and No. 4 Lake Highland Prep.
Area district meets will be contested on Oct. 23, 25, 26 and 27 at various sites.
Golfers head for Honda Classic: Ten of the area’s top golf teams will play a historic course in this weekend’s Honda Classic High School Invitational at PGA National Resort & Spa in West Palm Beach.
Girls teams from Circle Christian, The First Academy, Lake Mary, Lake Mary Prep and Lake Nona will play 36 holes on the Fazio Course today and Saturday. The area boys teams, Circle Christian, TFA, Olympia, Windermere and Winter Park, will matriculate the Champions Course for two days.
In last year’s Honda Classic, The First Academy girls cruised to victory, finishing 16 strokes ahead of runner-up American Heritage-Plantation.
The Olympia boys were the top area squad in 12th place.
