Sentinel gets space video, Pulse tribute Emmy bids

- By Roger Simmons

The Orlando Sentinel earned two Emmy nominations in the 42nd annual Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards.

A video by the Sentinel’s Rich Pope, Wesley Alden and former employee Kayla O’Brien was nominated in the Business/Consumer News category. The video was an episode of the Orlando Sentinel Snapshot video series that examined the area’s space program.

Pope was the host and driving force behind the episode, which focused on the space industry’s push to get America back into orbit and beyond by looking at key players such as SpaceX’s Elon Musk and Blue Origin’s Jeff Bezos, among others. Alden was the producer of the video, and Pope also was an editor on the project.

Another video shot and produced by recently retired Sentinel visual journalist Red Huber and O’Brien was nominated in Interview/Discussion Category. “Two Years After Pulse” featured interviews with family members and friends of those who were killed in the Pulse nightclub massacre in 2016.

“This is wonderful recognition of excellent work. We still see every day what Rich and Wesley do with their strong visuals backgrounds to tell stories in images and sounds,” Sentinel Managing Editor John Cutter said. “And the timing of this announcement makes us miss Red even more – he truly is the GOAT. I wish Red and Kayla were here so we could congratulate all of them together. Great work!”

The Suncoast Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recognizes the work of visual journalists in all television markets in Florida plus Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles and New Orleans, La.; Mobile, Ala.; Thomasville, Ga.; and Puerto Rico.

The winners of all categories will be announced Dec. 1 at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando.
