Knights unfazed Failure to climb in rankings no worry to Heupel, players

Outside of the Wayne Densch Student-Athlete Leadership Center Monday morning, disappoint­ed UCF fans vented frustratio­n over the Knights’ spot in the latest college football rankings.

After a topsy-turvy weekend that saw several top 10 teams lose, UCF didn’t move up in the polls despite extending the nation’s longest win streak to 19 games after rallying to defeat Memphis 31-30 Saturday. The Knights remained at No. 10 in the Associated Press poll and No. 9 in the coaches’ poll.

Sensing the growing frustratio­n, UCF athletics director Danny White tried to offer support for fans via social media.

“To those in #KnightNati­on who are frustrated by the continued lack of respect in the polls when compared to older college football brands: it’s ok! We’re the fastest growing University & city in the country, w/ the best recruiting base. They don’t understand yet, but they will!” he wrote on Twitter.

Inside the leadership center, UCF coach Josh Heupel seemed unfazed.

“I really still do believe at the end of the year that they’re going to look at who we played, how we played, gone undefeated if you run the table and then that will take care of itself,” Heupel said during his Monday news conference. “At the end of the day, we’re a long ways away from that conversati­on inside of our team, inside of our building.

“We can only control what we can control, which is our preparatio­n today and how we go play on Saturday. At the end of the day, people are going to look at this conference, look at who we’ve played, look at the crossover scores and I think we’ll be where we want to be if we handle our
