Oviedo is No. 1 in rankings

With a dominating performanc­e at the Bishop Moore Swing For The Cure Invitation­al, Oviedo finished the regular season as No. 1 on the Sentinel Super Six volleyball rankings.

Oviedo handed highly touted Tampa Plant its first loss of the season in the championsh­ip matchup of the invitation­al’s top tier — the Premier Division Gold Bracket. The Lions then opened their bid for a state championsh­ip with a 3-0 victory over Lake Mary in district tournament play on Tuesday.

Lyman moved up to No. 6 after a 3-2 showing at Swing For The Cure that included taking top talents Tampa Plant and Merritt Island to a third and final set in both losses.

East Ridge moved into the No. 6 spot with its perfect 22-0 record record. They Knights have not played a Super Six team, but they’ve lost only three sets all season.

After losing three consecutiv­e matches to close out its regular season, Dr. Phillips dropped to 11th.

District playoffs across Central Florida began on Monday and continue through tournament finals on Thursday.

The Lions are host for this week’s Class 9A, District 2 tournament, which concludes with a 7 p.m. Thursday championsh­ip game.

Hagerty entered the playoffs on a nine-match winning streak and extended that to 11 in a row with 8A-5 victories Monday and Tuesday.

The Warriors knocked off Dr. Phillips and Lake Highland Prep in a strong regular season finish. They’re home for 9A-3 tourney.

The Greyhounds scored 3-0 sweep in district tourney matches Monday and Tuesday and now turn their attention to Thursday’s final vs. Oviedo.

The Wolves are top seeded in 9A, District 4 and open postseason play Wednesday at Winter Park.

Area’s only undefeated team makes first Super Six appearance heading into homecourt 8A district semifinal on Wednesday.
