DeSantis’ fundraising letter comes with a $1 bill
Ron DeSantis is doing something politicians don’t normally do — doling out cash a dollar at a time.
But there’s a catch: He wants it back and then some.
Enclosed in a letter to potential donors, the GOP candidate for governor is sending a crisp $1 bill. But the letter ask for a donation of up to $1,000, warning that unless he meets his fundraising goal, his “socialist” Democratic opponent Andrew Gillum could win.
“I’ve enclosed a real $1 bill with my letter because I had to be sure to get your immediate attention,” DeSantis writes.
The letter, topped with DeSantis’ letterhead reading “From the Desk of Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Lieutenant Commander USNR,” was obtained the Orlando Sentinel from a Central Florida resident.
As the letter explains, it’s to help reach a goal of $4.3 million for the stretch run to the Nov. 6 election. It also urgently stresses the need to block Gillum from the governor’s mansion.
“As Governor I will build on Rick Scott’s successful reforms and take Florida to a whole new level,” the letter states. “Radical Democrat Andrew Gillum will undo those reforms and drag Florida down to the level of failed socialist states like Venezuela.”
DeSantis included a postscript: “I hope the $1 bill I enclosed got your attention because I’m locked in a toss-up race with a radical Democrat whose socialist policies would destroy all of the economic gains we’ve made in the past eight years. I hope and pray I can count on you one final time before Election Day to make the most generous and urgently-needed ALL HANDS ON DECK GIFT of $500, $750 or $1,000 before it’s too late. Thank you!”
A spokesman for the DeSantis campaign did not return a request for comment.
DeSantis’ campaign raised nearly $1.2 million in the week ending Oct. 5, the highest total for the campaign so far, which has raised $8.64 million.
Donations to the campaign are limited to $3,000 per person or business, but donations to unaffiliated political committees helping the candidate are unlimited. Friends of Ron DeSantis, a political committee supporting DeSantis, raised more than $30 million through Oct. 5.
